Bill Haslam has been very hostile to many of the bills that have come through the State of Tennessee Congress dealing with issues on guns. In February 2013, he was against Senate bill SB250 which would have allowed all Tennessee police officers to arrest a federal police officer trying to push new federal gun control legislation.

The second amendment to the U.S. Constitution states that "a well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the People to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed." It has been said that the 2nd Amendment was put in place to allow hunters and people to defend their homes. While the 2nd Amendment makes this possible, the intent of the law was to allow the citizens to have every means available to protect them from their own government when tyranny is being practiced. How can the State and the People be free when we have a federal government harassing citizens like the Bundy's in Nevada? What makes our federal government any different than that of England and King George in the 1700's?

As your next Governor, I will be a strong advocate for the 2nd Amendment rights of the people to be upheld. I will push for open carry laws that resemble other states that value the freedoms that our Founders wanted us to have. I will also push for bills like SB250 which establish state sovereignty over that of any federal law that is unconstitutional.
